This rainbow is kind of like a roadside memorial to the spirit of the now empty Rankokas Indian Reservation.
I took this photo about a year ago while strolling through Rancocas Woods, a state-owned park which served as home to the Renape Nation. The Renape occupied a 238-acre parcel for 28 years and maintained a museum and two annual arts festivals. A living legacy, the Powhatans’ events featured authentic Native American cuisine, tribal dancing, hand-made clothes and various crafts for sale or barter.
The photo shows a flooded area that hugs the interior of the main grounds.
A major cultural loss.
